Tantakuna – women’s group

Tantakuna is about women working together. The word "tantakuna" means together and is from the native Quechua language. Tantakuna strives to empower women through improving their social and economic potential. This is achieved by:

  • Direct employment – in a bakery, a small shop and from the sale of traditional handicrafts;
  • Training and education – to increase their chances of future employment; and
  • Social support and counseling in a safe environment – to enable the women to support each other through the challenges of daily life around issues such as domestic violence, economic difficulties and the education of their children.

Tantakuna products are handmade using traditional Andean techniques. The knowledge of these techniques is passed down from mother to daughter strengthening family ties and keeping the diverse Andean cultures alive. The proceeds from every product bought go directly back to the woman. This allows them to contribute to the family’s income and achieve a level of independence to make decisions for the benefit of the families.
