ducation is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty through increased work opportunities and empowerment. Unfortunately, the cost of education is out of reach for many in our community.
To address this issue, Proyecto Horizonte runs a scholarship program that covers tuition fees for daycare, primary and secondary school, night school (enabling adults to graduate high school), universities and technical colleges. Scholarships are granted based on thorough evaluation of financial need, including an interview and home visit, and are contingent on continued attendance and strong performance.
In the daycare center, children between the ages of 1-3 years receive the nutritious meals and education they need to flourish during this critical stage of development. Having a safe space to leave young children also allows parents to pursue work opportunities, boosting the long-term economic health of families.
Due to the fact that the state government does not entirely cover the cost of food and educators’ salaries, the amount needed to provide quality care is higher than what most parents can afford. Proyecto Horizonte offers scholarships that cover 30-50% of the expected parental contribution, thus enabling parents to go off to work trusting that their young children are in a safe and stimulating environment.
We monitor the attendance and development of our scholarship recipients carefully, and provide support to the whole family through our team of psychologists and social workers.

There are many children in Ushpa-Ushpa who have been left with relatives, have parents that do not support their education, or come from large families that cannot take on education expenses for all of their children. Without the help of a scholarship, these children would be forced to leave school to work. We help children stay in school and continue their education to completion, opening the door to a brighter future.

For adults who never had a chance to complete school, continuing education centers represent an invaluable opportunity to learn new skills, gain confidence, and broaden employment prospects. Our scholarship program subsidizes the cost of enrolling in continuing education centers, allowing adults to choose the programs that best fit their schedules and needs.

This program, launched in 2014 thanks to the generous support of the Emily’s Charities Foundation, subsidizes the cost of university tuition for bright and ambitious youth who could otherwise not afford to continue their education. In 2015, the program was expanded to include technical studies.
These scholarships are granted on academic merit and commitment to the community. In order to remain eligible, recipients are required to pass all of their subjects and complete 4 hours a week of volunteer work at Proyecto Horizonte.
